Dr. Thomas Fisher, ER physician at University of Chicago Medical Center, joined Public Health on Call, a podcast hosted by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Medicine, to discuss his new book, Emergency: A Year of Healing and Heartbreak in a Chicago ER. The book illustrates how societal inequities are evident in emergency rooms and shares stories from the COVID pandemic, illuminating the intimate relationship between doctors and patients. Thomas also talked about how health care—and ERs in particular—uphold systems of inequity even without intending to, and how providers can try to offer everyone coming through their doors the care they deserve. Listen here.
